"[A] wonderfully spooky supernatural rom-com."—People
Cassie thought Boneyard Key’s ghosts were tourist schtick, until her new home came with one—but can the attentions of the sexy coffee shop owner convince her to stay, instead of ghosting the town?

Small Florida coastal towns often find themselves scrambling for the tourism dollars that the Orlando theme parks leave behind. And within the town limits of Boneyard Key, the residents decided long ago to lean into its ghostliness. Nick Royer, owner of the Hallowed Grounds coffee shop, embraces the ghost tourism that keeps the local economy afloat, as well as his spectral roommate. At least he doesn’t have to run air-conditioning.
Cassie Rutherford possibly overreacted to all her friends getting married and having kids by leaving Orlando and buying a flipped historic cottage in Boneyard Key. Though there’s something unusual with her new home (her laptop won’t charge in any outlets, and the poetry magnets on her fridge definitely didn’t read “WRONG” and “MY HOUSE” when she put them up), she’s charmed by the colorful history surrounding her. And she's catching a certain vibe from the grumpy coffee shop owner whenever he slips her a free slice of banana bread along with her coffee order.
As Nick takes her on a ghost tour, sharing town gossip that tourists don't get to hear, and they spend nights side-by-side looking into the former owners of her haunted cottage, their connection solidifies into something very real and enticing. But Cassie's worried she’s in too deep with this whole (haunted) home ownership thing…and Nick's afraid to get too close in case Cassie gets scared away for good.

Narrator Jeannie Sheneman brings listeners to Boneyard Key, one of the most haunted towns in Florida. Cassie Rutherford has moved into the old Hawkins house, not knowing she's getting a ghostly roommate. When her laptop won't charge in her new home, Cassie meets Nick Royer, the owner of a local caf. Nick is a bit grumpy, and Sheneman gives his voice a bit of gruffness. As Nick and Cassie grow close, Sheneman adds warmth to her narration. She enlivens the audiobook through its secondary characters: gravelly voiced Elmer, the late owner of Nick's shop, who has lingered to give him advice, and Nan, the octogenarian psychic whom Cassie consults about her house. The listener can easily picture all the haunted happenings through Sheneman's performance. S.B. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

After all of her friends have married, had kids, and moved out of Orlando, Cassie relocates to Boneyard Key, FL, a small town that bills itself as Florida's most haunted place. Cassie thought all the talk about ghosts was pure marketing, but her new house does seem odd. The electricity is dicey, and the magnetic poetry on her fridge rearranges itself and seems to talk directly to her. In search of a laptop charging station, she heads to the local caf, where she meets Nick, the shop's owner. He's abrasive but agrees to show her around town using the local ghost walk, and soon, prickliness turns to passion. DeLuca's (Well Traveled) series starter is a spooky yet sweet romance featuring love in this world and the next. Jeannie Sheneman depicts lonely Cassie and brusque Nick as they fall in love, imbuing her narration with gentle humor and affecting depth; it's breezy but also in tune with the eerie situations Cassie encounters. Though some plot points may require suspense of disbelief, the romance is sizzling. VERDICT DeLuca's first entry in the "Boneyard Key" series should please listeners seeking laugh-aloud moments, not-too-scary chills, and a cozy paranormal romance.--Elyssa Everling
