WHAT TO PLANT FOR OCTOBER • It is very satisfying to see how much colour you can keep going in your garden as summer fades. Late-flowering salvias, Japanese anemones and actaeas are all in bloom from late summer into autumn, asters are a colourful mainstay at this time of year, and the pink flowerheads of sedums pale gracefully to brown and remain intact all winter.

From vast parks to tiny community gardens, New York Green: Discovering the City’s Most Treasured Parks and Gardens (Artisan, £25) is a guide to many of the hidden gems of the city, with stunning images that will make you long to be able to visit each one.

FEAST DAYS • Foraging and Feasting is a new online course presented by the extremely knowledgeable John Wright, author of three River Cottage books on foraging.
