WHAT TO PLANT FOR OCTOBER • It is very satisfying to see how much colour you can keep going in your garden as summer fades. Late-flowering salvias, Japanese anemones and actaeas are all in bloom from late summer into autumn, asters are a colourful mainstay at this time of year, and the pink flowerheads of sedums pale gracefully to brown and remain intact all winter.

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND • A new book with photographs by House & Garden contributor Ngoc Minh Ngo celebrates the beautiful public gardens and green spaces of the five boroughs of New York.
