Hi MiniMaggers!

MiniMag

Jam-packed Earth! • The planet is filling up pretty quickly, and there are some unpleasant consequences to this – quite similar to overpopulating your house. Imagine that your family had double the amount of people.

Our crowded planet

Young athletes steal the show! • The Olympics are a time when the world comes together to celebrate sport, friendship and excellence. This July, the city of Paris will host the 2024 Summer Olympics, and it promises to be an event filled with incredible achievements, inspiring stories and unforgettable moments. Let’s dive into what makes the Olympics so special and get to know some of the youngest athletes who will be competing this year.

Let freedom ring! • Let’s begin in the 18th century, when America was a collection of colonies under British rule. Tensions simmered as the colonists sought freedom from unjust governance. On 4 July 1776, a group of brave individuals known as the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, boldly declaring America’s autonomy. This historic document marked the birth of a new nation, founded on principles of liberty, equality and justice.

Shark-tastic adventures • Sharks are incredible creatures that roam the oceans, captivating our imagination with their sharp teeth, sleek bodies and fascinating behaviours. From the mighty Great White to the unique Hammerhead and the formidable Tiger Shark, these underwater predators come in all shapes and sizes.

Floaters and Sinkers • A fascinating fact about liquids like water is that some things sink into it, while others float on it. What makes things float or sink? Will something that floats always float and a sinker always sink? These are some of the questions we are going to find answers for in this article.

How things float

The Wonders of Water • Here are some more activities around sinkers and floaters. Let’s start with a puzzle. The theory of Archimedes (page 19) may help you solve this puzzle, or you can try the test below.

Water’s secret skin • If you drop a needle or paper clip in water, it sinks. It is possible, though, to make a needle or paper clip float on top of the surface of water. Can you work out how? See for yourself in the following activities.

Walking on water

How Buoyancy shapes our world • Buoyancy is a fascinating force that influences many aspects of our daily lives and the natural world. From the engineering marvels of submarines to the natural buoyancy of marine animals, understanding this principle helps us appreciate the balance and design in both nature and human inventions.

The art of sugarcoating! • Emojis are like little pictures that show how we feel! They’re super fun to use because they can express emotions in such cool ways. Just like how we use emojis to show how we feel, sometimes people use special words called euphemisms to talk about things in a nicer or more polite way. It’s a fun way to understand how language can be playful and creative, just like emojis!
