Classic Jaguar

Aug/Sep 2024
Magazine

Classic Jaguar aims to be the definitive celebration of this most iconic of British motoring marques. It will chart the historic journey of a car maker that started life in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool. The company soon evolved into a Coventry based manufacturer of sports cars. With a new factory and glamorous new models, Jaguar was flying from the 1950s onwards as it exported cars like the MkVII saloon and XK120 around the world and achieved huge motorsport success at Le Mans. Classic Jaguar magazine aims to relive these golden moments, looking back in time at this magical era for Jaguar, profiling the people, the places and, crucially, the cars that made the company what it is today. With its focus on the traditional, classic models of the past, Classic Jaguar will be the perfect complement to the comprehensive coverage readers can also enjoy in Jaguar World magazine.

GRACE? OR SPACE AND PACE? • Back in the early 1970s, only a Mercedes could come close to the image of a Rolls Royce - and if you wanted one, you paid far more than for cars of a comparable class. But despite being more expensive new, was the smaller and more Spartan Mercedes 250 truly a match for the stylish and prestigious Jaguar XJ6 2.8?

XJ-EXCESS • The early Eighties German tuner Koenig Specials is more known for its excessive body kits for Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz, yet it also turned its attention to the XJ-S. As expensive as they were extreme, only a few were modified, but we’ve tracked one down

THE WILLIAM LYONS STORY PART2 • In the second instalment of this three-part series dedicated to the founder of Jaguar, we follow the period from the end of the Second World War through to the merger with BMC

ON DAYS LIKE THESE • The 12th open E-type produced, 848 CRY, not only has period racing history, but also attracted fame for its role in The Italian Job, released 55 years ago. We take a trip through 848 CRY’s fascinating past and get to drive this piece of cinematic history

THE XKSS • The XKSS, a series-production road/race-going version of the D-type becomes a reality just before disaster strikes at Browns Lane.

D-TYPE MEMORIES • Paul looks at the time he drove a famous D-type, an event he’s only just remembered

XCLUSIVELY LETITIA A SHETLAND WEDDING • At the beginning of May we were in Shetland, with two XJ saloons, for the first of two visits to the northernmost isles in the UK.

SIGHTS FOR SORE EYES • A little on road beauty could rid us of the monochrome.

ALMOST NATIONAL TIME • The Jaguar Drivers’ Club can help you with Jaguar spares, gifts and shows.

FESTIVAL TIME • Mark the date in your diary for the Summer Jaguar Festival

INSIDE THE JAGUAR DAIMLER HERITAGE TRUST • The activities of the Trust are explained through their staff, volunteers & exhibits.

TRIPPIN’ DALES • Gareth Charlton explores the rugged delights of the Yorkshire Dales and takes the opportunity to marvel at feats of great British engineering

LETTHERE BE LIGHT • More trouble for the Daimler, but also more progress made.

TECHNICAL CHOOSING A POLISHER • We’ve been testing a range of eight different battery- and mains-powered polishers.

BUYING GUIDE DAIMLER SP250 • Fancy a Dart? Read our buying guide.

TRIED & TESTED SMOOTH OPERATOR • Could this XJ-SC be the best of the XJ-S range?
