LIFE ON THE EDGE • After a hard day’s work standing on the side of the road selling magazines, vendors Zamikhaya and Eric return to shacks to live their lives in the darkness, damp, cold and extreme heat. If you can donate, please get in touch. A kettle, a stove, plumbing supplies to build a toilet, these basics could make a significant difference.

Let’s get physical • Author Serai Dowling’s A Guide to Tidal Pools of the Western Cape, published by Rockhopper Books is a 212-page South African photographic guide, providing local insider information in addition to recommendations of places to visit near each of the pools. This book is a first for South Africa and for the African continent especially given the popularity of the Western Cape’s tidal pools and cold-water immersion/swimming.

Just a Moment: A Memoir • We revisit this intensely personal rugby memoir by Schalk Burger Senior and journalist Michael Vlismas published by Jonathan Ball.

Rise by Siya Kolisi • Do real life heros truly exist? The adulation and fanfare for sports stars knows no bounds, and Rise may have been a little premature as a life story which is still unfolding, yet it has been flagged as a worthwhile read.

Former street kid steps onto the global surfing stage • Capetonian Paul Sampson has battled seemingly insurmountable odds to compete with the best in the world.

Soweto boxing pros • A former SA boxer is training Soweto’s future stars. Stephen Msimanga trains 25 youths in his backyard in Orlando East.

Gamechanger! • Layla Arrison is a trailblazer in rugby and broadcasting.

Sleep yourself thinner • Why sleep is so important for losing weight.

Her Olympic gold • Online public shaming of women athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics highlights gender-based violence [enabled by online platforms].

Gugulethu kids’ sports • Sports tournaments keep learners off the street and on the field.

Unmissable moments! • South Africa will host several major sporting events as the year draws to a close. One to watch is Cape Town’s Kite Beach which will see the Red Bull King of the Air kiteboarding competition, with elite riders competing in high-flying stunts and, for the first time, a women’s division

Little issue

SPRING’S THE THING • Our Big Issue vendors enjoy art sessions hosted by Elaine Millin, our Art Facilitator. This session was inspired by our connection to nature, the animal kingdom, spring, and a little bit of influence from rugby and the Bokke!
