STARTING LINE • In his first Mini Transat Race, 19-year-old Melwin Fink, of Germany, won the opening stage by a significant elapsed-time margin, but redress later given to other competitors wiped away his advantage ahead of the second stage. Still, he finished third overall.
Rise of the Rookie • A new star has risen in the Mini Transat universe. That he’s the youngest is one thing. That he’s not French is another.
Generation X Boat • The lifelong progression of many young inland sailors starts on the dinghy marked X.
Man Overboard • Or how to survive five and a half hours in the water in a hurricane.
Sailing It Forward • Current champions of the Snipe class have benefited from those before them, and so it goes with another generation.
Terms of Engagement • With the release of official documents and an opening for entries, the vision of AC37 comes into sharper focus.
The Illumination of John Kolius • He rose to the pinnacle of his career during sailing’s heady big‑boat days, but in the end, it was the pressure of the America’s Cup that smothered his competitive fire.
Rebuilding a Team • When building anew or restarting a team, strive for a combination of trust, experience, and a shared commitment to learning and having fun.
2022 BOTY INTO THE WINNER’S CIRCLE • Our annual Boat of the Year Awards resumed after a one-year pause, which meant a few previous-year models made their way into the judges’ hands alongside a number of innovative new designs debuting in Annapolis at the 2021 United States Sailboat Show. Proving once again that good things come to those who wait, the wind cooperated and sun beamed bright on five performance-sailing craft that impressed the team and earned their respective awards. For our team of judges—pro sailor Chuck Allen, naval architect Greg Stewart and contributor Dave Powlison—the overall winner was a unanimous choice and one that will no doubt soon become king of the doublehanded dinghy sailing scene.

FLYING SOUTH • An unexpected spark has ignited local enthusiasm for this 70-year-old flat-bottomed speedster.
The Winning Formula • The bigger the fleet, the harder it can be to score consistent top finishes, but a couple of young 420 aces show how it can be done.
Rules to Play By • No one handicap rating rule has ever been perfect, and it doesn’t have to be—it just needs to be fair.
Rebooting the Machine • Out of all of Paul Cayard’s proposals for reinventing Team USA, building a highperformance track in college sailing is the one most likely to provoke a lively conversation.
