Nov 01 2022
Magazine

Steam Days is a monthly magazine dedicated to all steam railway enthusiasts. Each issue covers the six regions of British Railways: Western, Southern, London, Midland, Eastern, and Scottish, with the occasional article on Irish railways and the industrial scene. These well illustrated articles in the magazine cover the history of the railways of Britain from the early days of the 1800s through to the end of steam on British Railways in August 1968.

TRAINS of thought

The ‘G5’ class tank engines and the rebirth of an ideal heritage locomotive • No members of Wilson Worsdell’s NER ‘O’ (LNER/BR ‘G5’) class 0-4-4T design of 1894 reached preservation, but Paul Symonds, Leigh and Tim Taylor of the Class G5 Locomotive Co Ltd can now offer a past, present and future story as a new build locomotive brings revival.

West of England Rail Rover 1960 Meandering via Callington to Launceston (SR) • We consult the diary of Leslie R Freeman for the Southern Region content of Day 5 of a week in the West Country, Thursday, 2 June, and an outing starting in Plymouth and taking in Callington, Okehampton and Holsworthy, before reaching Launceston. Diary notes and all photographs courtesy of Transport Treasury.

STEAM DAYS In Colour 215: Aberystwyth to Dovey Junction • Setting out from the seaside town of Aberystwyth, in British Railways days we enjoy the still distinctive motive power of the former Cambrian Railways route through to Dovey Junction, taking in the two banks between Llanbadarn and Borth, as well as the picturesque near level section as the line turns inland at the Dovey estuary.

Christmas Gifts that last all year! • Treat a friend (or yourself!) to a year’s worth of Steam Days this Christmas… and as part of your subscription choose one of these three fantastic books. Plus, check out our other great magazine offers…

Birmingham (New Street) to Lichfield Station by station • Stanley C Jenkins describes the steam era infrastructure of what is now the northern section of Birmingham’s electrified Cross-City line, the former L&NWR route through Aston, Erdington, and Sutton Coldfield.

The allocation of passenger carrying rolling stock to the Scottish Region • In 1951 BR began a stock take of inherited passenger carriages in Scotland – John Macnab gives the inside story, as well as an account of pre-Grouping and ‘Big Four’ withdrawals, and concluding with the end of steam-hauled non-corridor operations.
