What the Hull?

Mark Sutcliffe • Once a journalist, Mark Sutcliffe now wears the chain of office. A whirlwind campaign saw the political neophyte win a majority mandate. Sutcliffe sits down with Robert Hiltz to discuss his approach to leading council, what he learned from the convoy, and what it’s like to be on the other side of the microphone

The art of family • This winter, it’s worth a trek through frigid temperatures to the Ottawa Art Gallery, for solace in a heart-warming exhibition called A Family Palette

Night Walks

THE SOUND CHOICE • “I have a passion for helping people,” she says. Retiring — or evolving — for Alolo means growing her non-profit, called Northern Girl Initiative, to help girls become a catalyst for change in their communities. She is interested in counselling work, too. “Having worked as a community developer for a very long time, I see that sometimes all that people need is someone who will listen,” she says. “It makes a huge difference. Sometimes, solutions are not that complicated. It takes us being compassionate, being there for one another, and just being human.”

THE FUTURE LIST • Claudette Commanda Rheal Labelle • Toni Jacob and Sophia Jacob Sahada Alolo • Kevin Ford

Claudette Commanda • As the chancellor at the University of Ottawa, she will continue to stand up for the land and Indigenous people, carrying on her grandfather’s legacy and inspiring the next generation

Rheal Labelle • Imagination and community collaboration are at the heart of this architect’s career. By designing buildings that speak to their environments, he creates a dialogue that unites individual aspirations with physical realities

Toni Jacob and Sophia Jacob • Two sisters, two paths. One mother who pushed them to give back to their community and supported them through life’s challenges. Why the city must now support the Jacob sisters

Sahada Alolo • She brings decades of experience and degrees from around the world to her work helping street-involved people to find a place to call home — and feel welcomed in their community

Kevin Ford • There is power, knowledge, and enthusiasm among retirees that can benefit the community — and combat depression. The man leading the city’s Men’s Shed program plans to harness it

The Young Ones • In addition to people with decades of experience on their resumés, the Future List shines a light on young leaders doing exceptional things

THE LIE THAT MADE ME • In 1989, Norman Barwin, a respected Ottawa fertility doctor, helped my mother get pregnant with donated sperm. Decades later, we discovered that Barwin was secretly inseminating patients with sperm that he had no right to use, including his own. How I finally learned the truth about my biological father

Bold Moves • For Elyse and Tom McCurdy, the choice to move down the street was a short but meaningful journey
