TENDER MOMENTS

INDABA

HAPPY DAYS • Is there a more fun and creative (and beautiful) city than Cape Town? Sue Watt shares some of the most memorable experiences from her first visit

CHEERS! • What happens when a brewer goes on safari? Kieran Aylward explores the heady world of traditional beers

COULD YOU BE A SAFARI GUIDE? Part3 • To test your knowledge of Africa's lesser-known species, this edition our friends at guide-training company EcoTraining ask questions around ‘the little five’.

MAKING THE CONNECTION • What got you into Africa in the first place?

Who are you?

CAMPFIRE tales • We love to hear how your relationship with Africa developed, and why you keep returning. Here's more of your stories. Thank you for sharing.

READERS’ PORTFOLIO • Further to the gallery in issue 100, here are more of your favourite photos.

Tarangire National Park • Why this often-overlooked park should be on everyone's Tanzania itinerary — and how to plan your visit

READERS’ VIEWS • We asked for your insights. It seems you rate Tarangire highly…

Conserving THE MARA • It has long been recognised that the Maasai Mara offers one of the premier wildlife-watching experiences in the world. It is no surprise that it is a perennial favourite for safari-goers — a bucket-list priority for first-timers and a cherished haven for regulars. But are we loving it to death? There is good news, though. In this special report, Anthony Ham looks at the appeal of the Mara, the impact that tourism is having and the efforts now being taken to try to bring some control to the management of the park. We also add your voice to the discussion. It is clear we all want — and need — to get this right.

WHAT THEY SAY • Operators, lodge owners, guides… all have a vested interest in protecting the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

WHAT YOU THINK • Travel Africa readers care deeply about Africa's wilderness areas and its wildlife. Regular safari-goers, you have a wealth of experience and insight, so it made sense to get a feel for what you think of the Mara and what you feel needs to be done to manage tourism. This is clearly a subject close to your heart — the response was extensive. Thank you to all who shared their thoughts. Here's a selection of your comments.

THE GREATER MAASAI MARA

A CHANGE OF PACE • Malawi is a place where you feel you have all the time in the world. So make the most of it: wherever you go, there's an opportunity to feel the land beneath your feet. On a recent visit, Phil Clisby tested some walking trails

DOG DAYS • SARAH KINGDOM JOINS AFRICAN PARKS TRACKERS ON THEIR DAILY WILDLIFE MONITORING EXERCISE IN MAJETE

A BY-NO-MEANS EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF OTHER MALAWI WALKS TO TRY

LUSAKA • With most visitors drawn to Zambia's renowned wildlife reserves and the Victoria Falls, few tourists send much time in Lusaka. Yet, like most African capital cities, a couple of days here will give you an authentic sense of what the country and its people are all about. Can Sarah Kingdom tempt you?

UGLY OR AWESOME? • South Luangwa guide, photographer and owner of Track and Trail River Camp Peter Geraerdts addresses the often-maligned reputation of the spotted hyena

MAKING TRACKS • Feeling intrepid? Load up a 4x4 and head into Mozambique, where new camping facilities make Maputo National Park an exciting prospect for wilderness-loving self-drivers
