INDABA

THE GREATER MIGRATION • It’s time to update your bucket list, says Sue Watt

GOING ALL THE WAY • We meet some of the NomadMania.com members who have visited all 54 African countries

DANCING WITH TRADITION • Sarah Kingdom is mesmerised by a remarkable festival in Eswatini

WILD ABOUT TECH • Take your wildlife-watching to the next level with the latest safari-friendly gadgets, reviewed by Tom Bailey

READING MATTERS • A new release catches the eye of Mike Unwin

SOUTH AFRICA DECONSTRUCTED

FUN IN THE SUN • There’s a buzz in Harare that can catch visitors by surprise, an energy that reflects a sense of enterprise, initiative and opportunity. With plenty to offer visitors, we asked resident Rose Gamble to share some of her favourite recommendations

THIS HILLS ARE ALIVE • The cultural aspect of Botswana is often overlooked by safarigoers, yet offers an important context. Undoubtably the most significant site is the Tsodilo Hills, the ‘Mountain of the Gods’. Valery Collins is a fan

Gone Fishing • When Jenny Bowen set off to hike the 92km Fish River Canyon, she didn’t realise it would prove to be the adventure of a lifetime, which started with a baboon defecating on her kit list (before stealing her lunch). We had to know more

Time to be taken seriously? • Malawi is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations, and for good historical reasons. Only two decades ago, the likes of lion, rhino and cheetah were either rare or extinct, and the network of nine national parks and wildlife reserves appeared to be in terminal decline. All that has changed dramatically in recent years, thanks to an ambitious rehabilitation and translocation programme that is gradually transforming Malawi into an all-round safari destination as rewarding as any in Africa. Philip Briggs reports.

Where the water meets the sky • North of the Luangwa Valley, beyond Kasanka, lies a water wonderland that offers a wildlife experience unlike any in Zambia — the country’s answer to the Okavango Delta, perhaps. And it has several drawcards that particularly catch the eye, says Sarah Kingdom

SHOEBILL PROTECTION

Winning the WEST • Aware of West Africa’s tourism potential, Mark Stratton joined a cruise down its coast, curious to know if this could be a catalyst for encouraging more people to experience this intriguing region. Would it make you more inclined to visit?

where the MAGIC begins • We asked guidebook author Mary Fitzpatrick to explain the deep-rooted appeal that has made Tanzania such a special part of her story

MARY’S TRAVEL TIPS

HER TOP SPOTS

OUR FAVOURITE PLACES • We asked eight local residents to tell us about their best-loved spot to visit in Kenya. None are what you’d think of as mainstream tourist destinations. Perhaps these lesser-known gems are worth including in your next itinerary?

ETERNAL FASCINATION • Amid the overwhelming grandeur of Ancient Egypt’s antiquities, Mike Unwin finds a relatable thread that focuses his attention and connects the experience to the modern day

Once more into the new frontier • Everyone we have met who has been to Zakouma National Park has sung its praises, lauding it possibly the best wildlife reserve in Africa. So when Nicky Dunnington-Jefferson returned to Chad, we had to ask her to share her overall experience
