MILIEU

Fall 2023
Magazine

In MILIEU, every story captures the look and feel, the mood and character, the style of a place - its milieu. The milieu that defines a great house or garden, the unique character of a design professional, the message conveyed in a thoughtful essay about home life, the creative strategies for accomplishing the look you want for your home - these are the elements of our magazine.

EDITOR’S SAY

Looking Back • MILIEU premiered on newsstands and in subscribers’ mailboxes with the Fall 2013 edition. And now, a decade later, the Fall editions continue to be particularly special for our team as we celebrate this milestone. Join us as we revisit some of our most memorable interiors that continue to inspire us.

MILIEU

FEATURED DESIGNERS

From The Desk Of… • Falling for the golden-hour warmth and tones found in an autumn day

CURATED

Out of the Ordinary • A fall party in an English garden is always memorable, but especially so when it celebrates MILIEU’s 10th anniversary. With the application of decorative trims—fringes, tassels, piping, ribbons—every element goes from ordinary to extraordinary. That narrow scrolling of added color and pattern tracing a hat’s brim or the cushions on a sofa, at the hem of a dress, along the drape of a velvet coat, or as cinching for a handbag becomes the detail you often remember best.

COMMUNITY

Telling A New Story • Designer Sheila Bridges reinterprets traditional toile forms to reflect contemporary experiences relevant to her life and everyone’s

FORWARD Thinkers • The artisans, artists, and designers who inspire us

A Bright Light

Figuring It Out

Light Source

JOURNEY

Mediterranean Revival • On the scale of a Greek myth, MILIEU’s Design Editor, along with her extended family, embarked on a tour of Greece and Turkey that revealed the meaning of democracy and familial spirit

ETCETERA

An Artist’s Realm • An exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, explores the work of acclaimed artist Matthew Wong

A Fiesta of Style

THE WELL

Leaving a Mark • Here, as with all of his projects, interior designer Darryl Carter has accomplished what he always does best—to make a serene, comfortable home that accommodates any lifestyle

Collector’s Item • A new riverfront home in a charming Southern town near New Orleans is a repository for its owner’s evolving collection of art and antiques

Reclaiming THE PAST • Betsy Brown purchased an old house in Chattanooga as a new perch from which she can watch one of her grandsons grow and flourish

A Natural Palette • The colors, textures, and forms of a bucolic swath of Tennessee land inspired the rooms of a new house outside of Nashville

nothing COULD BE finer • An 1880s house in the Carolinas was updated and expanded with a respect for history and an embrace of casual, collected comfort

London CALLING • Designer Kathryn Ireland refreshes a 19th-century London townhouse with an accent on color and comfort

The Goods • Your source for what’s new, novel, and essential

GO SHOPPING
