MILIEU

Spring 2024
Magazine

In MILIEU, every story captures the look and feel, the mood and character, the style of a place - its milieu. The milieu that defines a great house or garden, the unique character of a design professional, the message conveyed in a thoughtful essay about home life, the creative strategies for accomplishing the look you want for your home - these are the elements of our magazine.

EDITOR’S SAY

Looking Back • MILIEU premiered on newsstands and in subscribers’ mailboxes in 2013. And now, a decade later, we acknowledge some of the most inspiring interiors from each seasonal issue; here, we revisit 10 years’ worth of memorable moments from our Spring issues. These are rooms and gardens that remain among our staff’s and our readers’ favorites.

MILIEU

FEATURED DESIGNERS

From The Desk Of… • Jewel tones mixed with earth tones create a springtime palette

CURATED

It’s A Wrap • Fine furniture and antiques always retain their allure, even when covered in fabric. With pink and brown as the newest colors of spring, we found an assortment of antiques—consoles, dining chairs, a tall case clock, a lantern, dresser, daybed, child’s toy—and enveloped them in chic, striped patterns. Knowing, or not knowing, what lies underneath is part of the fun.

COMMUNITY

A Classic Returns • With the reissue of The Private House, author, antiquarian, and visionary designer Rose Tarlow reflects on the creation of her 2001 cult favorite

Friendship BONDS • Recognizing that they share the same passions for garden design, life in the country, and entertaining at home, Paolo Moschino and Bunny Williams now work together

THE WELL

Going Back & Forth • A Chicagoland designer maintains two aesthetic identities—her main home and a second house that functions as a design studio. Though quite different in composition and appearance, both places reflect her creative approach.

French REVOLUTION • After reviving an 18th-century Paris apartment, a designing couple counters classical flourishes with contemporary art and furniture, forging a link between past and present

House of Their Dreams • A creative Houston couple envisioned a new look for their century-old cottage. After a complete redoing, the big picture is now complete.

IN THE NOW • With a thoughtfully reconfigured layout, refreshed surfaces, and a collection of art and furnishings, designer Allison Burke helped a young family turn a 1930s house into a home of today

IN GOOD TIME • A Parisian antiques dealer found the perfect antique—a centuries-old house in Normandy that he has restored into a masterpiece for today

The Goods • Your source for what’s new, novel, and...
