CATERING FOR CHANGE • At lodges across Africa, time will have been spent during lockdown perfecting new recipes preparing for the return of guests. KEEPING IT REAL HOW TO WRITE ABOUT WILDLIFE

THE BIGGER PICTURE • Why did the term need to be reframed, and how was it done?

THE NEW BIG 5 • Unlike the old ‘Big 5’, which was restricted to Africa, the New Big 5 hoped to celebrate global wildlife, and was opened up to international species such as wolves, polar bears, pangolins, jaguars, tigers, snow leopards, koalas and orangutans. The final nominations feature three African animals – including one not previously on the list. Here we meet our New Big 5, and on the following pages leading conservationists discuss the African animals included, plus we get tips from expert photographers to help you capture better images on your next safari.

future-proofing nyungwe • The plan to protect and develop the park

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME • If you’re keen for a change of scene after so long under lockdown, why not set up camp for an extended period on Kenya’s coast? There’s a host of excellent, affordable long-stay options that will give you a taste of beach life and a good restorative boost.

MULI BWANJE? • All visitors to Malawi quickly become familiar with this cheerful greeting. For Kelly White, it has accompanied him on many visits during his enduring 26-year relationship with the country. So what keeps him going back?

A GUIDE’S TALE
