Australian Performance Horse Magazine

March - April 2022
Magazine

James and Tanya O’Ryan are a husband and wife team with a reputation for creative ideas, work attribute, positive attitude and dedication in everything they commit to. They are excited to add the Australian Performance Horse Magazine to the enterprises they currently own and manage. With the couple’s passion for horses the opportunity to own the Australian Performance Horse Magazine seemed a no brainer. A third generation Equestrian and a background across the many English and Western disciplines Tanya understands that horses are more than a hobby, they are a lifetime passion. James has a background in farming as well as producing, training and riding Stock Horses. Together they run Crackenrock Performance Horses. The APH Magazine first hit the newsstands in 1989, and in 2019 we celebrate 30 years of publication. James and Tanya look forward to taking this magazine into the future by continuing to include all performance horse disciplines from show jumping to showing, campdrafting to reining and everything in between. James and Tanya believe that a job worth doing, is worth doing well. In every area of business, they are known for their commitment to delivering products and services they can be proud of. As new owners of the Australian Performance Horse Magazine, their commitment is to provide advertisers, industry representatives and readers with a quality publication worthy of our many performance horse disciplines.

THE GATE EXERCISE • Of all the hundreds of exercises I use at clinics, few have as much an impact with riders as The Gate Exercise. Simple in its structure (yet often ridden incorrectly) The Gate Exercise is one that can be used to deal with several different problems in a simple manner.

Inside the Western Show Arena ‘Control those Butterflies!’ • Stepping into the show arena can be daunting, especially if you’re a newbie! You’re not alone, because even the toughest of competitors get the butterflies. With rail classes often boasting more than a few exhibitors, it’s understandable! So, no matter what level of competition you show, help settle those nerves and build confidence by learning to use the arena to its full advantage.

‘SHOW BABY, SHOW’ • The thought of colourful rosettes and sashes adorning your weanling is an exciting one! But the main result we should all strive for when showing a young horse, is not a championship sash. You see, what’s more important is that your baby stays sound, in mind, overall health and development. Regular routines, patient, quiet training, and building their confidence will set them up for a long and happy life in the show arena.

How essential is salt in your horse’s diet? Very! • Salt. We eat it. We swim in it (well, those who live near the ocean do), and we feed it to our horses. We know it is an essential nutrient because of the high concentration of Sodium (Na) found in it (salt is approximately 39% sodium. The rest is Chloride). It’s found in commercial hard feeds and found naturally in pastures, grasses and hays. But do we give enough to our horses? Can we give too much and are there times when we need to give more than normal?

Show Off Your Versatile Horses • In these times of specialization, a horse that can go from one event to many others has got to be worth a pretty penny. These versatile horses are not only worth seriously thinking about, they’re worth much more than we know!
