Australian Performance Horse Magazine

May - June 2022
Magazine

James and Tanya O’Ryan are a husband and wife team with a reputation for creative ideas, work attribute, positive attitude and dedication in everything they commit to. They are excited to add the Australian Performance Horse Magazine to the enterprises they currently own and manage. With the couple’s passion for horses the opportunity to own the Australian Performance Horse Magazine seemed a no brainer. A third generation Equestrian and a background across the many English and Western disciplines Tanya understands that horses are more than a hobby, they are a lifetime passion. James has a background in farming as well as producing, training and riding Stock Horses. Together they run Crackenrock Performance Horses. The APH Magazine first hit the newsstands in 1989, and in 2019 we celebrate 30 years of publication. James and Tanya look forward to taking this magazine into the future by continuing to include all performance horse disciplines from show jumping to showing, campdrafting to reining and everything in between. James and Tanya believe that a job worth doing, is worth doing well. In every area of business, they are known for their commitment to delivering products and services they can be proud of. As new owners of the Australian Performance Horse Magazine, their commitment is to provide advertisers, industry representatives and readers with a quality publication worthy of our many performance horse disciplines.

ADVICE…THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE HONEST

LOU KIMBER A COMPETITOR’S CHOICE • Horses, most predominately Quarter horses, have always been a huge part of Lou Kimber’s life & she feels very blessed in the journey they have taken her on, so far. Apart from Quarter horses, she says she honestly doesn’t know of another breed that a rider can compete on, in such a diverse variety of disciplines throughout their career, and have a great level of success in each event. It’s that versatility that makes her love the breed so much.

How essential is salt in your horse’s diet? Very! • Salt. We eat it. We swim in it (well, those who live near the ocean do), and we feed it to our horses. We know it is an essential nutrient because of the high concentration of Sodium (Na) found in it (salt is approximately 39% sodium. The rest is Chloride). It’s found in commercial hard feeds and found naturally in pastures, grasses and hays. But do we give enough to our horses? Can we give too much and are there times when we need to give more than normal?

Pulling the Past into the Future • ‘Is it just me, or does the clip-clop of large shod hooves and the jingling of polished silver or brass buckles & harness bells on gleaming, polished leather harnesses evoke a feeling of kinder days, less hassles, and a little old-fashioned romance? It was a more placid way of life that really doesn’t seem to exist much anymore. But if Drayhorse Shires have anything to do with it, it’ll be around for everyone to enjoy for a lot longer yet.’

The Brightest New Name in Queensland! • One of the longest running Western Performance clubs in the industry in Queensland—the Gunalda & District Western Performance Club, Inc.—has begun 2022 with a name change! With a number of reasons behind the change, members agreed that it was something definitely needed. Now, along with the new name, has come a wonderful chance for the club to re-emerge, with a sunny new logo, and a fresh, welcome enthusiasm!
