Gay Pages

Spring 2022 - Edition 104
Magazine

Established in 1994 and one of the world’s 25 oldest printed magazines, the sophisticated Gay Pages is the only gay glossy coffee table magazine in South Africa. It enjoys comprehensive national print distribution, reaching approximately 1600 outlets ranging from airport lounges, retail and 1400 mail boxes. This clean, presentable coffee table publication has a wide and diverse audience, while many premium brands advertise with us, as the affluent, brand loyal gay consumer segment is one of the most sought-after audiences globally. Our focus on writing reviews on travel, restaurants, cars, lifestyle and luxury products, whilst publishing gay content from all over the world, made us a household name and popular with local and international tourists from Japan to the USA. Our incredibly popular website has over 1000 articles (www.gaypagessa.co.za) and has tremendous reach, with more than 100 000 page views per month. We offer both print and online subscriptions.

THE ODD, THE WEIRD AND THE DOWNRIGHT CREEPY STRANGE HISTORIC PIGMENTS. • With Halloween falling in our on-sale period, I thought it might be fun to look at some historic pigments that might make one pause for thought or send a shiver up one’s spine.

Jeep’s interesting gay history in the US • Experiencing the launch of the new Grand Cherokee reminded me how we worked closely with Guy Franken for about ten years on establishing this brand in South Africa’s gay community as well. Very clever advertising campaigns sent a clear message to our target audience and Wrangler, in particular, was adopted by many new owners I knew personally. Gabriel Janse van Rensburg who established the Gay Pages with me in 1994, emigrated to Canada with his partner Gerrit a few years later and they bought a Grand Cherokee soon after they got there.

KING of a TRAGEDY • I am a big fan of artists being emotional terrorists that impact you in ways that you don’t expect. Some do it through their live shows or through fashion, but others do it simply through their vocals and their music. When I first came across the music of Isak Danielson, I was moved and shaken and hungry with curiosity. I binge-watched his videos and was completely in awe of how his voice translates into visual impact. I had the privilege to get to chat to this handsome guy with his pretty blonde curls and piercing eyes, whilst being inspired by the positive energy that shines through despite his music often reflecting the opposite.

IT PAYS TO BE GAY • Why diverse teams are more profitable and how to get your own

Love IN THE POST CORONA ERA • Anyone who has ever used the popular dating app Grindr knows that there are more Faceless Men than the Game of Thrones television series. Whether you’re discreet, doubtful, or just ready to get down, Grindr, Tinder and other dating applications changed the landscape for queer people. Smartphones are more readily available than ever before and the ability for different social groups to find appropriate dating apps has become easier: there’s a reason why Christian Mingles, Coffee Meets Bagel and Thursday exist.

Love is the absence of judgement • He lies on our bed, bare-chested, arms stretched out behind him, a quiet snore, the two dogs nestled into his sides. A cool breeze from the Atlantic Ocean takes a chance through our opened French doors. I reach down and gently caress his beard, trying not to disturb his nap, but he opens his blue eyes and stares into my soul. “Tu sei il ragazzo più bello del mondo per me,” I whisper in Italian, bending down, I kiss him, cup his face in my hands and ask, “Do you know what that means?” He pats the dogs....
