WHERE STYLE AND STRATEGY MEET • Russell & George has made a name for itself in the Australian design scene with an aesthetic that is both of its time and notably classic. Practice founders and architects Ryan Russell and Byron George share how their design strives for a social, sophisticated and strategic outcome.

REFINED CHAOS • Asha Nicholas and Chris Stanley have been partners in life and work since finishing their architecture degrees 25 years ago. Their (business) baby, Splinter Society, is a distillation of the pair’s complementary design approaches and two decades spent absorbing experiences together.

HARLEY GRAHAM • The director of Harley Graham Architects takes inside on a tour of his personal passion project, dubbed Phoenix house and located in Byron Bay.

DESIGNING BETTER CITIES FOR WOMEN AND GENDER DIVERSE PEOPLE

THE PARTHENON, MELBOURNE-STYLE • It’s a big feat – bringing to life a replica of the symbol of Ancient Greece, a mid-5th century BC temple that still dominates the Athens skyline. But that’s what the National Gallery of Victoria is attempting on Melbourne’s Southbank with the 2022 NGV Architecture Commission.

DESIGNING A SAFER FUTURE • Designed for women and families escaping domestic violence and homelessness, Viv’s Place has a unique accommodation model, incorporating trauma informed design to create a safe and secure space. Questioning the traditional model, ARM Architecture and Launch Housing aim to change what Australian social housing can look like.

YOGA WITH A VIEW: SOMA FINDS A HOME NEAR BYRON BAY • Nestled among the rolling hills of Ewingsdale on the outskirts of Byron Bay is Soma, an oasis of modern architecture, natural elements and the ancient practice of yoga.

EAST OF EAST END • Situated in Adelaide’s Heritagelisted old East End Produce Markets, which were developed into residential accommodation during the 90s, East End residence is a three-level townhouse that possessed ‘beautiful potential’ in need of realisation.

LEYLA, AN INVITATION TO A VOYAGE • Perched atop the Burbury Hotel in Canberra and nestled above the skyline and clouds, this café by day and bar by night reveals very different visages, one with a hint of Italian modernism by day and the other an ode to the retro universe of Edward Hopper at night.
