Quilty Treasures

Queensland Quilters' Quilt Show • In mid-October last year, the Queensland Quilters were delighted to share their members' quilts in the annual quilt show. The show exhibited the talents of individual members, affiliated groups and special interest groups. The annual Challenge, Modern Challenge and the State of the Art (SOTA) quilts were also on display. Following are some of the winners. You can see all the winning quilts at: www.qldquilters.com/galleries/quilt-show/2022-quilt-show-gallery

THE HOME OF BEAUTIFUL BLOCK OF THE MONTHS

Poetry and Prose • This quilt is entirely Cheryl’s own design — she has called the appliqué block Cheryl’s Block and the rectangular block Long Story. The technique is raw-edge appliqué with hand-stitched blanket stitch and piecing on the other blocks.

Hoof It Up Lone Star • A delightful combination of the traditional Lone Star pattern and the folk-art style of the goat and horse appliqués.

Off the Shelf • Enjoy this selection of new and recently released books on patchwork and quilting topics and techniques.

Double X, No 4 • This coverlet was inspired by a vintage quilt in a friend’s collection. Sharon loved the scrappy effect of the quilt and the unusual fabric combinations used by the unknown maker so much that she set out to replicate it. She found the block after some hunting in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, titled Double X, No.4. The resulting coverlet is an exciting combination of reproduction and contemporary fabrics, which means you can use your stash and make some new purchases to spice it up!

Monica’s Quilt

Rainbow Pineapple • Making contemporary quilts using traditional patterns is very satisfying; omitting sashing and borders and using a bright-colour palette really takes this traditional Pineapple Log Cabin right out of its comfort zone. After Heather’s fouryear-old granddaughter commented on learning about the rainbow at kindergarten, Heather decided to use the colours of the rainbow — R, O, Y, G, B, I, V. The fabrics all come from her stash — a great stash buster!

Every Which Way • This wonderful Flying Geese quilt first appeared in Homespun in 2014. We share it here as we are sure that our QC readers will enjoy it! Jemima’s colour scheme and fine pattern balance have ensured a high-style design.

Grounded • Are you ready to make a modern quilt? Do you want to make a big impact without all the hard work? This quilt uses colour to create depth and transparency. Add more interest by selecting an unexpected colour palette and a non-traditional background colour. The offset border and navy-and-white centres ground the colours and the design.

New Canterbury Part 5 • Are you ready to move on to Border 7? It features a gorgeous array of 28 Variable Star 6in blocks. Rotary cutting and machine piecing will see these blocks stitch up quite fast. They are made of simple Flying Geese units and squares.
