LA FRANCE DE VICHY SUR LE BANC DES ACCUSÉS/VICHY FRANCE ON TRIAL • Julian Jackson s’est fait remarquer en 2018 avec une biographie du général de Gaulle, actuellement en cours d’adaptation par le réalisateur Antonin Baudry, ancien conseiller culturel à l’ambassade de France aux États-Unis. L’historien britannique, spécialiste de la France des années 1930 et 1940, s’intéresse maintenant au procès du maréchal Pétain. Un ouvrage traduit en français ce mois-ci qui s’inscrit dans la même veine que celui de l’Américain Robert Paxton sur le régime de Vichy, autre sujet sensible. Serait-il donc plus facile pour les chercheurs étrangers de sonder les heures sombres de l’histoire de France ?/Julian Jackson first made a name for himself in 2018 with a biography of General de Gaulle, which is currently being adapted for cinema by director Antonin Baudry, a former cultural counselor at the French embassy in the United States. The British historian, who specializes in 1930s and 1940s France, is now turning his attention to the trial of Marshal Pétain. His book, translated into French this month, is in the same vein as American historian Robert Paxton’s work on the Vichy regime – another sensitive subject. This begs the question: Is it easier for foreign researchers to delve into the darkest hours of French history?
