When nature’s symphony turns into an alarm • Everything alive on Earth, known as Earth’s biodiversity, is like a colossal orchestra with billions of different creatures singing and playing together in a splendid symphony. Every creature on every mountain, forest, grassland and in every sea, plays its part, big and small, to perfection. When nature functions right, it produces incredible beauty, breathtaking in its splendour and majesty.

THE AMAZING MAURICE

The taming of cats • Cats probably began living near human settlements to catch the rats and mice that were feeding on stored grain. People soon saw that cats were useful and encouraged them to remain. Nobody knows when cats first started living with humans, but it was probably at least 5 000 years ago.

Street life • All cities have a secret world of teeming animal life. City cats find plenty of pigeons, rats, mice and cockroaches in alleys, dustbins and drains. City-dwelling cats have their own territories, crawling into basements, under sheds, or up onto roofs. Male city (alley) cats mark and defend their territory in the same way as pet cats and wild cats.

Many adventurers, sailors and scientists since then have tried to find evidence or even traces of this lost continent.

Make your Future Count … • Numbers are all around us. We use them on our TV remotes to change channels, we use them to make phone calls to our friends and we even use them to just tell the time. Without numbers the world would be boring! What’s more, numbers are used in maths, which can be...
