LIFE’S SIMPLE PLEASURES • Night Hawk II is the umpteenth Caribbean to carry that name in Scott White’s long association with this well-respected Australian GRP boat brand. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS • Sell and buy new or totally refurbish a boat they knew well and loved? That was the question for the owners of this Salthouse 57.
AB FAB SAILING • If you’re lucky, there comes a time when you can afford to give in to your desire to have a bigger, more comfortable cruising boat. The days of making do with a cramped interior, low headroom and an ‘intimate’ cockpit are gone, and you can finally step aboard something a lot larger and more luxurious.
Spare the rod • A fishing rod is a wonder of technology: strong, flexible and light. But it's also very fragile if not treated appropriately.
Trim tabs for speed and safety • Trim tabs are widely recognised as a safety item that allow boats to run flatter and therefore faster in bigger seas.
Zipwake uptake • Swedish boat-trim specialist Zipwake has underscored its growing international popularity with a stellar 2023 performance – its best year ever.

FAST GUIDE TO FOILERS • THERE IS, NATURALLY, AN AVALANCHE OF INFO ONLINE: LEARN-TO-FOIL SCHOOLS, EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS, FACEBOOK GROUPS, NZ CLASS ASSOCIATIONS. HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT THE FOILING VEHICLES AT FOIL BAY OF ISLANDS.
STEPPING OUT • It is interesting that even a year or two ago it was still something of a novelty to see a boat with a plumb-bow, although newer designs coming from Europe tend to have this style. Even more eye-catching, for those who knew to look for them, are stepped hulls. It seems all ‘wrong’ to design a boat with chunks missing below the waterline, and yet there are increasing numbers of this type appearing as well.
