ULTIMATE WEEKEND CRUISER • The new Rayglass 3000, available in outboard and diesel inboard versions, is a completely new model for Rayglass, one that Brunswick believes will do well here in New Zealand, and in offshore markets as well.

THE CHASE IS ON • A scintillating new Kiwi-designed America’s Cup 40 chase boat hit the water in Auckland in late April. Built by Fusion Marine Boat Builders in Silverdale, it showed its paces before being packed up and shipped off to its new Swedish owners.

MAINSHEET MENACE • “Keep your head down” is the most basic instruction for someone’s first sail in a P Class, or any sailing boat. The boom has long been recognised as a danger when going about, and particularly when gybing.

THE FORGOTTEN PORT • It can be an epic journey there, and it’s a relatively short creek – complete with surprises. The adventure is well worth it, on both counts. With the good company of old shipmates – even better.

What a drag! • Properly set, a reel’s drag system prevents busted lines and lost fish, but too much drag can be hard on anglers.

GRAVITY AT 45° SOUTH • Boaties entering Doubtful Sound often query the chart’s numerous Spanish landmarks. They date back to 1793, when cartographer Felipe Bauza penned the first map of the Sound’s lower region. But his chart was incidental – Bauza was there for a different reason.

For those who can endure • The Seagull Regatta, which has been held annually since 1980, took place this year over Easter Weekend. It saw boats exploring the Waikato River, from Karapiro through to Hoods Landing.
