STRAIGHT TO THE POINT • The 970 Pro Sportsman is White Pointer Boat’s premium blue water sportfishing model. With 40 boats of this design built to date, the latest – Overdraft, launched October last year – is expertly crafted for serious angling and superb offshore performance.

WAVE OF POPULARITY • YouTube is a popular platform to showcase boating, fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities. Tom Fraser talks to one young boatie exploiting its reach to showcase some remarkable adventures.

MEDITERRANEAN MISSION • Seasoned cruising sailor and occasional Boating NZ contributor John Woolfe relates a memorable post-Covid cruise through the Greek Islands and along the Turkish coast, a voyage not without its challenges.

HAIL THE HARDTOP • A breezy day in late May with squally showers sweeping across Bream Bay perfectly illustrated why hardtops are so popular in New Zealand. On our Haines Hunter SP635 we remained warm and dry. The journey both ways was considerably more comfortable than it would have been in a more open style of trailer boat.

Second time around • Buying a secondhand boat should not be difficult or stressful – provided buyers follow a few simple guidelines.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS • With his Learn to Sail programme, Kerikeri Cruising Club’s Derry Godbert introduces families to sailing. For many it is the first step on the voyage of a lifetime.

FLAT OUT FINESSE • When many people think of Sealegs amphibious boats, they imagine something like the original 6.1-metre RIB that kicked off the range in the mid-2000s – something smallish to buzz about in then drive back up the beach to the boatshed. But the concept, and the company, has come a long way in the last 20 years, and the latest craft to hit the water sets a new standard in terms of what an amphibious alloy RIB can be.

BOAT BLING

Balance and weight • Getting the balance of a boat right is perhaps the most critical element in improving real race performance.

SWEET ROSE • The pretty daysailer slipped graciously through the water in the 15-knot breeze, moving as smoothly as a ballerina on a dancefloor. My first thought was that a yacht this pretty had to have a story.

Chilly fishing • The planet might be warming, but we can still expect several months of cooler weather.

WORKING WITH WEATHER • PredictWind – one of the world’s most popular wind/weather forecasting apps – was once the exclusive domain of sailors. But a growing number of power boat owners are now embracing the technology.

RETRO BOATS

A true champion • Given the more than 100-strong New Zealand team for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the tally of six medals was considered a poor return. Echoing public sentiment, the press was critical of New Zealand’s Olympic efforts.
