Let there be light! • The most realistic-looking dolls houses are the ones that pay attention to the finishing touches. The devil, as they say, is in the detail; the pair of slippers by the bedside, the magazine on a chair, the reading glasses on the desk… Add a further element of realism to your dolls house rooms with some (non-working) light switches. The ones here are quick and easy and ideal for houses from the 1920s to the 1950s – although it was not unusual to see this style of light switch as late as the 1970s in old houses that had not been rewired.

Doll's house for a doll's house • This little doll's house is a perfect example of how polymer clay can be used to make components for a model, baked and then assembled when hard. It is designed as a children's doll's house for your dolls house nursery and is therefore in the scale of 1/144th when based on a real house, although only 1/12th when based on a child's toy. Try to be as accurate as you can when cutting out the house pieces so that they will fit together well when assembled. Tiny hinges are available from dolls house suppliers but you could use a small box hinge instead.
