Magazine

If you love the spectacle of immaculately-restored old machinery, or are fascinated by Britain’s rich industrial and transport heritage, Old Glory is the magazine for you! In vivid detail it brings back all the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Glorious showman’s engines belt out the amperes to drive historic fairground rides; pairs of mighty steam ploughing engines turn the soil; steam rollers make up roads once more; tram wheel flanges squeal through town and city streets; colourful working narrowboats ply the canals; dray horses deliver good ale to the pubs; vintage tractors cough into life; stationary engines turn over tirelessly and the commercial vehicles we used to know take to the road again. This magazine covers these magnificent steam engines that once powered this nation. Whether you’re interested in the latest news, stories of steam engines saved from obscurity, upcoming events or detailed features on the history of these wonderful machines you’ll find it in Old Glory.

OLD GLORY IS NOW 108 PAGES!

MAGGIE’S BACK IN TOWN! • One of 2024’s good news stories is that Kevin Foley family’s 1911 Aveling & Porter GND 5 ton tractor is back in town and looking superb. No. 7410 Maggie was burnt out in a garage fire during 2022 and has now been rebuilt to as-new condition thanks to Tom Fields-Pattison’s hard work in the UK.

BACK ON THE SCENE • At the Rural Times Past event held at Horns Cross, East Sussex over 10-11 August it was great to see the Clifton family led by Liam, Ella and brass cleaner Esme with their rare 1908 Aveling & Porter A7 left-hand cylinder 7hp traction engine.

LEFT-HAND CYLINDER AVELINGS

BIGGER THAN EVER! • The editor takes a brief look at the Shrewsbury Steam Rally that took place on 25-26 August, the biggest rally to take place in the UK this year where there was so much to see and enjoy. David Reed’s full report on the event, which he visited on the Monday, will be in our next issue.

EAST KENT PLOUGHERS REUNITED AT WEALD • The Weald of Kent Steam & Country Show took place over the first weekend of August at Woodchurch, Ashford, Kent. In contrast to last year’s wet rally there was good weather on both days, which encouraged a large number of public to attend, reports Bob Moorman.

BURRELLS MAKE PILGRIMAGE TO ST NICHOLAS WORKS • With the Fengate Farm site for the Weeting rally being so close to the St Nicholas works of Charles Burrell & Sons in Thetford, this year’s Weeting event provided the perfect opportunity for a number of exhibiting Burrells to road over and visit their spiritual home. Simon Colbeck was there to witness the day’s proceedings.

FERMOY IS BACK! PART 2 • After being away from the rally scene for several years, Stuart Phillips’ 1909 Burrell Showman’s road loco Fermoy made a welcome return at Llandudno in early May. David Reed visited Stuart at his Shropshire base to find out more about this fascinating engine and concludes the story here
