Old Glory

Nov 01 2024
Magazine

If you love the spectacle of immaculately-restored old machinery, or are fascinated by Britain’s rich industrial and transport heritage, Old Glory is the magazine for you! In vivid detail it brings back all the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Glorious showman’s engines belt out the amperes to drive historic fairground rides; pairs of mighty steam ploughing engines turn the soil; steam rollers make up roads once more; tram wheel flanges squeal through town and city streets; colourful working narrowboats ply the canals; dray horses deliver good ale to the pubs; vintage tractors cough into life; stationary engines turn over tirelessly and the commercial vehicles we used to know take to the road again. This magazine covers these magnificent steam engines that once powered this nation. Whether you’re interested in the latest news, stories of steam engines saved from obscurity, upcoming events or detailed features on the history of these wonderful machines you’ll find it in Old Glory.

VETERAN CAR RUN PREVIEW 2024 • Zack Stiling takes us through the upcoming Sotheby’s-sponsored RAC London to Brighton Run on Sunday 3 November, which you might want to go along and watch this year,.

RESEARCHING AND PUBLISHING ‘FOSTERS ON THE FAIRGROUND’ • Kevin Mason reflects, in words and pictures, on the journey from an idea to the publication of Fosters on the Fairground. His first encounter with a Foster showman’s engine was in 1972 when Don and Dorothy Robinson acquired No. 14502 Victory, and the origins of the book can be traced back to a conversation over breakfast in their kitchen while preparing to take Victory to a rally.

WINIFRED STARS AT SUCCESSFUL MARSTON STEAM & VINTAGE • Well-organised and successful is the message from the second Marston Steam & Vintage show held on 17-18 August on the Leicestershire-Northampton border. This area needed a good rally like this and they have got it now, that’s for sure. People came in their droves which is something which didn’t happen at their first attempt last year.

BIGGEST ONSLOW EVER! • David Reed visited the Onslow Park Rally where one of the best line-up of engines in the country could be seen, an event that is not to be missed with the GDSF gone forever.

GOOD SELECTION AT CROMFORD • As always the selection of miniatures at the Cromford Steam Rally was excellent; after the event was cancelled last year there were more here this year than ever before.
