Australian Adventure Bike

Issue 17
Magazine

Our goal in ULTIMATE ADVENTURE BIKE AUSTRALIA is to appreciate everyone that’s having a crack — big or small — and enjoying whatever it is that’s an adventure to you. Hopefully, along the way we can steer you in the right direction (pun kinda intended) and bring to the fore just how much fun and how liberating adventure riding is. The adventure bike scene is one of the most vibrant across the globe and nowhere is it more relevant than in this vast sunburnt country. We were built by adventurers and the need to explore is in our blood. There’s never been a better time to do it on a motorcycle with an amazing array of machines and gear available for all. And now they’re finding freedom once again on bikes that take them back in bush and well beyond, in a less aggressive environment. Now is the time to reach those riders. Readers will be treated to the highest quality photography and journalism with bike tests and bucketlist rides leading the features. Each issue will also have dedicated ride tutorials and handy on track how to’s and will be chockas full of gear and accessories that we know this audience loves.

NEWS & GEAR

DUAL PERSONALITIES • While the leading British and European brands are all over the litre-plus ADV super-tourer class, Honda is the lone Japanese brand to offer a seriously off-road-capable big bike in the form of the Africa Twin. And there’s more than one AT to choose from.

LET’S SCRAM • For any pastime to grow, there has to be a ready pathway for new participants keen to stick their toe in the water. Indian brand Royal Enfield has taken its popular Himalayan adventure bike and given birth to the Scram 411, an ideal urban adventure multi-tool for anyone with a desire to find out what ADV riding is all about.

TASMANIAN TRAVELLERS • Tasmania is a state jam-packed with ADV riding treats, and this year riders on the BMW GS Safari overdosed on the very best the Apple Isle has to offer.

WORLD RAID ANZACS • Aussie moto content creator Adam Riemann and Kiwi MX legend Ben Townley team up to taste the new Ténéré 700 World Raid at the bike’s global launch in Spain … hasta la vista, baby!

SMALL PACKAGES • Who says cubes rule? They don’t have to when you ride an adventure bike. For some of us, riding light and packing lean is just the type of ticket to adventure we’re looking for.

BOOSTIN’ THE ROOSTER • It’s been a year since we first tested the Honda CRF300 Rally, but we’re rapt to have finally scored one as a long-term project bike build. And our goal is clear: we’re keen to make a light and lean, giant-slaying ADV machine!

ON THE SCULPTURE TRAIL • The joy of riding an adventure bike is as much about the destination as it is the ride itself. But how do you find out where to go? Fortunately, our new Destinations feature is here to give you inspiration. First cab off the rank is central Queensland’s Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail. This is a ride where you can mix a little scrap metal art appreciation with exploring some very wide-open spaces.

THE GOOD DOCTOR • It’s with a tear in the eye that after more than 25 years, we join a legion of riders all around the world to say farewell to Suzuki’s legendary Doctor, the do-it-all DR650SE thumper.

MEET THE PROFESSOR • He’s called the Professor, and for good reason. He’s analytical, methodical and when it comes to spinning the spanners, he sure does know his stuff. It’s time to find out a little more about AAB’s very own Tech Editor and master sweep rider, Clive Ward.

INTO THE OUTBACK • For many riders, nothing beats the feeling of riding your adventure bike through Australia’s mighty outback. Fresh off completing a pre-run for the BMW Safari GS Enduro, Boothy has a...
