NEW & NOW • The most popular décor trend is still biophilic design. This results in, amongst others, the use of terracotta shades. Soft décor textures, as well as various candles to create ambience, are also seen. The kitchen is the meeting place where people cook, socialise and work, and the home office is better organised. Here are 6 trends that matter right now
FLOWER POWER • The dainty dahlia is currently in vogue in the world of flowers, while also inspiring many décor items. And the large variety of colours complement the soft hues of pink, coral, orange, clay and other warm shades that are now used in interior design
Cool, cosy and eco-friendly • IsoBoard brings you an assortment of practical and classic insulation solutions for your modern home
LOGIN TO LIFESTYLE • We’ve been busy. As if Covid-19 showed us that the unthinkable could happen overnight and now we’re running with it. We’ve realised how unpredictable and precious life is, so why postpone your dreams for a day that may very well not arrive. We’re packing up and moving to the coast, to the Karoo – we’re living the new, writes Bianca du Plessis Malan
HOMECOMING • I always knew I’d come home. To the Eastern Free State. The certainty set in many years ago. How and when was less clear. And then, after almost 20 years in Cape Town, except for a temporary stay or two in the Middle East, it happened
THERE’S JUST SOMETHING IN THE AIR • Two years ago, during lockdown, Cape fashion stylist and editor Mari Groenewald and her family retreated to her parents-in-law’s smallholding in Montagu for ‘just a few weeks’. But now they’re firmly ensconced in this historical village
NET MOOI FINE IN STANFORD • After much roaming around, including a stint in France, Cape Town interior decorator Lanie van Reenen now lives in her own house, a restored property, in Stanford. In this Overberg hamlet, where people still care about each other, she feels at home and secure
TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER • Occasionally someone still asks the question we constantly had to answer 17 years ago: What inspired you in the winter of 2005 to buy a ‘weekend house’ in the modest little Swartland village of Koringberg? After all, there’s nothing here – where’s the bank, the petrol station, the restaurant, the coffee shop?
WHAT WE RECEIVE IS ENOUGH • In my granny’s house in the Little Karoo, the sunroom was exactly that, definitely not a home office. Her pantry was packed with jars of pickled beetroot, small bags of dried fruit and pockets of potatoes. And when she left the house, Ouma took only the kitchen door key with her, not a whole bunch plus remote controls for the alarm system, garage door and security gate. My own huge collection of keys, in particular, triggers my yearning for a simpler life

Pink skies and Karoo quiet • The arid landscape of the Upper Karoo isn’t to everybody’s liking. You associate it even less with city dwellers and their dreams of semigrating. Meanwhile, a modern, new farmhouse with an on-trend monochrome interior has come into being, in preparation for the day the owners come to live here permanently
GET THE LOOK • A stylish entrance hall welcomes guests. In the Strydoms’ farm house one is greeted by a combination of...
